Increase your
chances of attracting these elusive swallows by deploying some of these
life-sized (7 inch long), highly-detailed, Purple Martin
decoys!
Thousands of people attempt to attract
these charming, gregarious swallows to their backyards every year, but only a
fraction are successful. Establishing a new colony site is often
difficult, because Purple Martins are social or colonial nesters; they prefer
the company of other martins and are reluctant to be the first to settle at a
new site. Decoys are believed to increase the chances of attracting
breeding Purple Martins by helping to create the illusion of genuine colony-site
activity, giving investigating
martins the confidence to stay and nest. Decoys are thought
to be especially effective when used in combination with martin vocalization
tapes. These decoys are being eagerly sought by people wishing to do
everything possible to enhance their chances of establishing a colony of Purple
Martins. These decoys are 7 inches long and molded in very dark blue HDPE plastic. They were adapted from on an original
Purple Martin carving by a World Class bird carver. These
decoys come with instructions and all hardware necessary for mounting on a
variety of different types of housing.
"In my 10 years of working with Purple Martin decoys, I have seen investigating martins interact with decoys in a variety of ways. I have seen martins perch next to them, peck at them, cling next to them, cuddle-up next to them, mount and attempt to mate with them, and scold them. I have no doubt that they are a helpful tool in attempting to establish a Purple Martin colony site." – Ken Kostka, Proprietor, Purple Martin Visions
These decoys can also be used by people with established colony sites in a variety of ways:
To
help expand and transition a colony site.
It can often take several seasons to get martins to
expand into newly erected
housing at the colony site. With these decoys, landlords can encourage martins
to move into unused (but more easily managed) housing more quickly.
To lure martins to a nesting material platform . Martins can be taught to come to a platform stocked with materials used in nest-building like mud, twigs, and pine straw. By not having to land on the ground to pick up nesting material, martins are kept safe from cats or other ground predators.
To help deter aerial predation on martins. Cooper’s Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and American Kestrels sometimes prey on Purple Martins at the colony site. Decoys can be positioned around the colony site to help distract attention from real martins. Predators sometimes go after decoys, because they appear to be slow, inexperienced, or unwary martins, just what predators are accustomed to stalking.
These decoys also make great gifts and decorations!

Real
Purple Martins perched on the same gourd rack with Purple Martin decoys...Can
you tell which are which?? The hawks around here apparently can't,
because my decoys are repeatedly struck by hawks (accipiters)! I believe decoys
help to protect real martins by drawing the hawks' attention away from the real
martins.
